Battery storage optimization: LEAG energy cubes cooperate with NOVUM

In order to optimize the market opportunities of battery storage operators and contribute to more sustainability and security in the energy market, LEAG energy cubes recently started cooperating with the Dresden-based high-tech specialists from NOVUM engineering. With the help of a globally unique technology based on artificial intelligence, the Hightech Startup Europe 2017 (GITR) team can look directly into the heart of battery storage systems. This not only allows for an accurate determination of the condition of batteries of all types, but also makes it possible to prevent failures and optimize the way in which storage systems are used. Lea Ladusch, responsible for Business Development & Marketing at LEAG energy cubes, gives exclusive insights into the new cooperation as well as current trends in the energy industry in an interview with Ambivation.

How did it come about that LEAG energy cubes started working with startups?

Startups offer the advantage of focusing on a specific topic and developing innovative solutions by pooling expertise in their respective field. Our goal at LEAG is to bring such expertise on board and literally add more building blocks to “our cubes.” Incidentally, it is not only we ourselves who benefit from this. Our partners, such as operators of renewable energy plants and energy storage systems, also gain added value from the cooperation, for example in the context of product optimization and expansion.

How do you get in touch with suitable startups?

LEAG is involved in Leipzig’s SpinLAB, the startup accelerator of the university there. This is also how we got to know the startup DieEnergieKoppler, for example, which now supports us as a permanent cooperation partner in the integration of renewable energy plants into our virtual power plant. We know our newest cooperation partner NOVUM Engineering, which complements us in the area of battery storage optimization, through the Energy Saxony industry network and our joint work on the BMSmart project. So it’s important to actively search and network if you want to find suitable partners.

We have already published an article at Ambivation about the collaboration between LEAG and DieEnergieKoppler. Can you tell us a little more about your cooperation with NOVUM today? What added value does it bring to your customers?

By supporting NOVUM, we can offer our customers an all-in-one solution for optimized battery monitoring and better market opportunities. NOVUM’s highly accurate battery condition determination (SoC and SoH) enables an increase in usable battery capacity, which we can in turn use to optimize revenues in the electricity markets.

What else does NOVUM’s technology offer your company?

On the basis of artificial intelligence, NOVUM can look directly into the heart of battery storage systems for the first time. With this innovative technology, the Dresden-based technology company is able to plan battery maintenance intervals and extend battery life by up to 20 percent. Based on highly precise battery condition determination, irregularities can be detected in time and necessary precautions can be taken, as well as individual battery modules can be used in such a way that they can be operated as gently and sustainably as possible. NOVUM thus contributes significantly to the safety and sustainability of large-scale battery storage systems. In combination with the marketing solutions of LEAG energy cubes in all suitable products on the electricity market, we jointly create a robust business case for batteries.

That sounds good! What do you like most about working with startups?

Regardless of the added value for us and our partners, it’s primarily the passion and enthusiasm with which startups drive their topics forward. That is something we share. As LEAG energy cubes, we have been networking electricity producers and consumers into agile virtual power plants since 2019 and offer energy services related to operations management, electricity marketing and green power supply. Started as a startup-like organization within the LEAG Group, we have been operating on the market as an independent company since 2021. So we have followed a very similar path and can very well understand the enthusiasm and willingness to push forward ideas we believe in, even if it sometimes takes a lot of staying power.

Thanks Lea! One final question: Do you observe any particular trends in the energy industry where startups are already playing – or will play – a special role in the future?

With the expansion of renewable energies and technologies such as storage, hydrogen and e-mobility, also in the context of sector coupling, the demands on virtual power plants, energy management and electricity marketing are growing. Those who offer intelligent solutions for the ongoing digitization and optimization of processes will be able to establish themselves on the market in the long term.
